Swim team earns Conference title, readies for State meet

As they look forward to competing at state Nov. 4 and 5, the Lady Wolves swim team brought home another win from the Conference swim meet in Pinedale last weekend.

“I was happy with our swims this weekend,” Coach Colleen Seiloff said. “We kept working hard all last week and went into Conference tired, and so I thought they swam really well.”

Seiloff said the competition at Conference was good and the other teams had strong swimmers. She explained that the 3A Conference teams changed since last year, but she believed it worked out well and all the teams had a strong meet.

Despite the competition, the Lady Wolves won by 32 points over Lander. Green River girls took first place in seven out of 12 events, and came in first, second and third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. In addition, Tanith Smith broke the conference record and the Green River High School record for the 100 Yard Freestyle event, and was named both “Swimmer of the Meet” and “Swimmer of the Year” at Conference. Diving Coach Rich Barker also tied for “Assistant Coach of the Year.”

Today the swim team will swim at home for their “Last Chance” — an event when swimmers will attempt to qualify for state if they haven’t yet or qualify for additional events.

Currently 17 girls are qualified and will be swimming at state.

“We’re pretty excited, that’s quite a few,” Seiloff said, explaining they’ve gotten to the number of qualifiers they were hoping for this year, and that several girls are close and hoping to qualify before the team heads to state.

“I’m just looking forward to watching these girls swim after they’re rested,” Seiloff said. “The celebration of state is just so much fun. It’s a great culminating event for three months of really hard work.”

Despite the Lady Wolves bringing home the state championship last year, Seiloff said the focus this season hasn’t been on the championship, but on individual and overall improvement.

“Our focus is just to do the best that we can individually and on our relays, and if we win we’ll find out at the end of the meet,” Seiloff said. “There’s a lot of good, competitive teams out there, so I don’t know. We’re going to try our hardest, but like I said, the best way to do that is just to focus on getting the girls prepared and ready to swim their events, and if they do the best they can individually, we’ll see what happens with the team.”

With the focus on always doing their best, the championship may not be out of reach for the Lady Wolves. Seiloff admitted, “You just never know what can happen at state.”
