The Wolves took another loss Friday night as the Evanston Red Devils held them to only one touchdown during Green River’s homecoming game, winning it 27-7.
While the Wolves’ previous outing with the Worland Warriors was a high-scoring contest, Green River’s meeting with Evanston was more defensive as both teams initially struggled to find the end zone.
The Wolves were the first to receive, but were forced to punt as they sized up the Evanston defense. Evanston’s first possession of the game nearly led to a touchdown, but a Red Devil fumble at the goal line recovered by senior Jacob Schieve gave the Wolves a second chance at making that first score. While the Wolves battled their way to their 47-yard line, the Red Devil defense forced another punt. The first quarter wound down with both teams scoreless.
Evanston would be the team to take the lead after the Red Devils’ defense recovered the ball following a Green River fumble. Scoring with 4:04 left in the half, the Red Devils held the Wolves off until the first half ended.
The Red Devils found their groove in the second half, exploding into a second touchdown following a two-play possession that ended with a 14-0 lead for Evanston with 11:39 left in the third quarter. Green River’s offense continued to struggle throughout the quarter, punting the ball back to Evanston off of their possessions. The defensive line for the Wolves, led by plays from Tanner Moseley, Dylan Taylor and Kyler Bartlett, continued holding their own through the quarter as well, keeping the Red Devils from the end zone.
With the fourth quarter, Evanston made their third score of the evening with 6:50 left in the game, extending the lead to 21-0. The Red Devils wouldn’t be finished after that as another touchdown would widen the gap further to 27-0 following a failed P.A.T. kick that flew away from the goal post.
The Wolves finished strong building upon momentum from several first downs resulting from passes from quarterback Caleb Lake to Taylor and Bracken Miller. Lake would score the only touchdown for the Wolves after running the ball into the end zone. The following kick succeeded, putting the Wolves on the scoreboard with seven points.
The Red Devils held the Wolves to 84 rushing yards and 87 passing yards, while posting 317 yards rushing and 64 yards passing. Green River had five penalties called against the team, costing them 39 yards while the Red Devils had seven penalties called, giving the Wolves 51 yards throughout the game.
Following the last two games at home, the Wolves will hit the road to play the 4-1 Jackson Broncs. Action starts at 6 p.m.
