Letter: Reader disappointed with budget cut

Dear Editor,

I was gravely disappointed in the Sweetwater County Commissioners and their decision to cut Golden Hour Senior Center $68,000. Over 800 senior citizens depend on the many services they offer. One of the primary services is the program for meals.

This program was started in Rock Springs at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County by Rita Steinbeck, director of dietary services for Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. Sweetwater County is not just Rock Springs, but made up of Green River and various smaller communities.

Rock Springs services the Rock Springs meals and handles the seniors of Rock Springs and surrounding areas. Golden Hour has senior citizens from Green River and surrounding areas. Both centers prepare meals for seniors on site. These meals are either served on site, picked up curbside or delivered.

Each senior center prepares meals on site except for the participation of our county Memorial Hospital, which prepares frozen meals to area citizens who require special dietary needs or are disabled and can not cook for themselves.

My disapproval is in the after effects of COVID on the senior population.

As we know, the seniors have been hit hardest by COVID and there were many who did not survive. Many lost a family member and could not take care of themselves without home care assistance.

Our hospital, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County and board understands the impact of the pandemic on seniors.

The board of Memorial Hospital, administration, physicians, nurses and employees understand the true impact of this pandemic on seniors.

In conclusion, I think every service should be available to all the seniors who need them. Both senior centers are trying their best to make up the difference.

Remember folks, there is a minimum staff and serviced by many volunteers.
