Munoz earns state title in 300-meter hurdles

The Green River High School track teams traveled to Casper to compete in the Wyoming High School Track Championships at Kelly Walsh High School this past Thursday through Saturday, earning one state title at the end of the event.

For the Lady Wolves, there was only one competitor to finish in the top eight. Junior Lillian Munoz ran the fastest 300-meter hurdle time at state in any class to win with a time of 45.71 and finish as the state champion.

Also competing for the girls was junior Kalea Gibson, who took ninth in the high jump at 4-10 and sophomore Autumn Casey jumping 4-8 and taking 15th.

On the boys side, one of only three seniors competing, distance runner Greg Sherwin, took 10th place in the 3,200 meters with a fine time of 10.22.63.

In the throwing events, senior Jacob Martinez took 14th in the discus at 122-01 and 13th in the shot put with a personal record of 43-07.50 while junior teammate Cole Murray took sixth in the discus at 140-09 to score 3 points.

In the triple jump, senior Trevor Brangham finished 19th at 39-00 while freshman Christopher Wilson was 12th at 40-02.50. In the long jump, Wilson took 10th with a leap of 20-04.50. In the high jump, the Wolves finished second, fourth and ninth with junior Hayden Roberts leading the way at 6-0, good for second place and 8 team points. He was followed by Brangham, who earned a personal record on the day as he cleared 6-0 for fourth place and 5 team points, followed by senior Paxton Castillion taking ninth at 5-8.

Roberts also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.62, getting 6 team points, and eighth in the 110-meter hurdles, good for one more team point and a team total of 15 points.

Head coach Dan Hansen commented that both Munoz and Roberts were awarded All State with their first and second place finishes.

Hansen also said the future looks bright as seven of the 11 athletes at State will return next year.
