Local fighter prepares for Sat. bout

Beck "The Last Boy Scout" Shields has been busy over the past few months.

The 17-year-old MMA fighter has continued a rigorous training schedule and participated three amateur fights, including his first jiu-jitsu match since his last major bout in Mississippi last October.

Beck, who attends the Wyoming Virtual Academy as his training schedule makes it difficult to attend classes in person, said the heavy training and previous bouts have left him feeling more confident as he prepares for his next major bout in Horn Lake Mississippi Saturday.

"I know I'm not going to die when I get in there," he said.

Beck will be taking on Keion Lucas for the Shotgun Entertainment Fighting Championship promotion's fly weight title.

Beck said he's excited about the opportunity, but isn't letting it consume his thoughts. He said he plans to continue grinding to become a professional fighter regardless of the outcome.

"I'm looking at turning pro after I turn 18," he said.

Beck's mother, Jamie said she's attempting to get a local event started after the fight as well. Shields, who fights in honor of all the armed forces and law enforcement, said the family was told about a local promoter who was interested in hosting a fundraiser featuring mixed martial arts.

The family is also seeking donations to help Beck continue in his journey to become a professional fighter, setting up an online gofundme account for donations.
