The Wolves had several track athletes on both the boys and girls teams travel to Riverton for the second time this season to compete in the 4A West Regional track meet Friday and Saturday.
A number of the young Wolves athletes improved their times and distances, setting personal records and showing promise for the coming years, but only the first eight finishers qualified for State, along with some that had achieved the marks in previous meets to pre-qualify.
The Lady Wolves have qualifiers in the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump. Qualifying in the 100 hurdles was junior Lillian Munoz with a time of 16.76 in the preliminaries. In the 300-meter, hurdles freshman Madison Murdock qualified by finishing eighth with a time of 52.64. Also qualifying in the 300 hurdles was Munoz, with the second fastest time in the state.
The girls also saw two qualifiers in the high jump with sophomore Autumn Casey improving her personal best on the season to 4-10.00 to take fifth at Regionals, with junior Kalea Gibson taking second at 5-02.00.
The boys were able to qualify athletes as well. Senior distance runner Greg Sherwin improved on his personal record in the 3,200-meter run by taking third and lowering his time by 14 seconds to improve to 10:28.21.
Junior Hayden Roberts led the way in qualifying for the 110-meter hurdles by taking forth in 16.04, followed by freshman Christopher Wilson in sixth. Wilson improved his personal record on the year to 16.76. Roberts also qualified in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing 5th in a personal record time of 42.41.
Roberts led three Wolves in qualifying for the high jump. Roberts was first at 6-02.00, followed by Trevor Brangham in 5th at 5-8.00 and Paxton Castillion, seventh in 5-8.00.
Brangham also qualified in the triple jump, improving 6 inches by leaping 40.07 to claim 5th place. Wilson had a big meet as well, qualifying fifth in the long jump at 19-10.25 and taking third in the triple jump with a new personal record of 42-04.75.
For the throwers, senior Jacob Martinez qualified in both the shot put and the discus by taking eighth in both and junior Cole Murray qualified in the discus by finishing in third place.
Head track coach Dan Hansen was pleased with the young Wolves' performance and proud of the seniors who led the way.
The competition was fierce as Green River had a relay team set a school record, but the time did not qualify this year for the State meet. Despite the obstacles the team faced over the weekend, such as having to stay in Thermopolis due to hotels throughout Riverton being booked full due to multiple events taking place in the town, Hansen felt his team worked hard all season and showed significant improvement in many areas.
State will take place next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper.
