Track team competes in final regular season meets

On the final week of the season for the Wolves, the junior varsity meet featured an opportunity for the underclassman to compete prior to Regionals.

One exception for the Boys was senior distance runner Greg Sherwin, who ran away from the competition and took first place in the 3,200-meter run in 10.42.17.

In the 100-meter dash for the girls, Olivia Sheets, a sophomore, took seventh in 14.56, took 12th in the 200-meter dash at 31.69 and took sixth in the triple jump at 28-5.00.

Also for the girls, Morgan Owens took 18th with a throw of 18-03.25, followed by teammate Laynie Fundell in 19th at 18-00.00.

The two young throwers switched places in the discus with Fundell taking 18th at 50.03 and Owens throwing 48.06 for 19th.

In the 100-meter dash for the boys, Braiden McCann led the way for the Wolves, taking 11th in 12.56.

He was followed by Roy Steen in 12th at 12.73 and James Eason in 18th in 13.5.

Marcos Mandujano took ninth in the 1,600-meter run in 6:29.23.

In the 200-meter dash, Roy Steen led the way taking fifth in 25.97 and was followed closely by Xander Lindsey in seventh in 26.16, then Braiden McCann in 15th in 27.50 and James Eason at 19th in 29.23.

Lindsewy led the way for the young Wolves in the long jump, leaping 17-03 for 13th place followed by McCann in 15th at 16-01.50 and Steen 17th at 15-06.50. Lindsay competed in the triple jump, taking seventh at 30-05.00.

The lone entrant for the boys in the pole vault was junior Jacob Schieve, taking 12th clearing 8-06.00.

Ethan Maez was the lone entry for Green River in the boys shot put, throwing 31-7 and taking 11th, with James Eason taking 17th at 61.02.

On Friday the Wolves followed up their J.V. meet at Mountain View Thursday with a trip to Afton to take on the always-strong Star Valley Braves and their neighbors Cokeville in a small meet.

Unlike recent meets with up to 20 teams and more than 110 competitors in some events, this meet had few competitors in many of the events.

There were however a number of personal records set during the day, including some fine times and good distances recorded in the last meet before next weeks regional track meet in Riverton.

For the girls, in a small group of six sprinters, the Lady Wolves’ Natalie Walgren took fifth in the 100-meter dash in 15.96, followed closely by teammate Malea Gibson in sixth in 16.00.

In the 200-meter dash, also with six sprinters, the Kalea Gibson took second in 29.53 with Walgren coming in sixth at 34.05.

In the 800-meter run, Madison Yoak took first against one other runner in 2;37.22. The 1,600 meters saw three of five runners from Green River placing well, with Madison Bauers leading the way by taking first in 6:12.55, Jayleigh Wright coming in third at 6:16.20 and Vanesa Valerio placing fifth in a time of 6:51.46.

Lillian Munoz was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, but came back to win the 300-meter hurdles in one of the top performances on the day with a personal record of 48.81, followed by Liberty Ferrell taking fifth in 54.67.

Kalea Gibson tied for first in the high jump with a leap of 5-02.00 feet.

In the pole vault, Madison Bauers continued to improve by clearing 7-0.00 -- good enough for second place.

In the long jump, Ferrell jumped 14-02.50, taking sixth and placing fifth in the triple jump at 29-00.75.

Four Lady Wolves competed in the field of 26 throwers, with Chatney Tirrell leading the group followed by Lydia Westenskow, Malea Gibson, and Faith Hill.

Gibson had a great improvement on the day, taking fifth in the discus and improving to a personal record to 78-08, an improvement of 27 feet. Gibson was followed by teammates, Lydia Westenskow, Chatney Tirrell, who improved three feet and Faith Hill.

For the boys, leading the way in the 100-meter dash was senior Paxton Castillion, taking 3rd place and followed by teammate Trysten Halter taking 11th.

The 800-meter run saw the Wolves take fourth and fifth place with Hale Iwen and Lucas Knight respectively. Knight set his personal record by almost four seconds.

Competing against six other distance runners, Nate Stevenson also had a personal record in winning the event in 4:55.01, improving his best time by 3 seconds.

Once again, Hayden Roberts led the way for the Wolves in the 110-meter hurdles, taking first place in 16.50. He was followed by Christopher Wilson, a freshman, taking second and improving his best time of the season to 16.90 with Evin Hansen taking third to give the Wolves a sweep of the top three places.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Wilson took first with Hansen taking forth. Roberts won the high jump by clearing 6-01.00, followed by teammate Trevor Brangham in second and Paxton Castillion taking third in his personal record of the season at 5-8.00.

Wilson Was also a top finisher in the long jump, taking second with a fine leap of 20-03.50, just a .5 inches off his season’s best. Castillon took third, also improving in this event with a personal record of 19.01.50, while Trysten Halter and Alex Atkinson finished eighth and 10th.

Wilson was also the Wolves’ top finisher in the triple jump, leaping 40-04.00, followed by Brangham in fourth and Atkinson in eighth.

Cole Murray led the way in the throws, taking first in both events. He won the shot put with personal record at 44-04.00, followed closely by Jacob Martinez in second at 43-09.00, then Trysten Halter, David Dillion, Jared Westenskow and Abraham Hill.

Finally, Murray also took the discus with a personal record of 147-07 followed by Abraham with a personal record and taking third at 121.05, then Davis in sixth, Martinez in 10th and Westenskow 16th.

Next up will be Regionals in Riverton with better weather and a group of performers improving weekly.
