Legislator updates city council on state revenues, federal money

Rep. Mark Baker, R-Green River, spoke briefly to the Green River City Council Tuesday night, providing an update on funding from the American Rescue Plan and revenue estimates for the state.

Baker, who serves in House District 60, said the city should receive the first payment from the American Rescue Plan after the state receives money for cities and towns.

The city is expected to receive $1.8 million from the plan, while the county is anticipating $8.2 million. Rock Springs is expected to receive $3.4 million, with each receiving half the payment this month, while the other half would be paid next year.

Money paid to the cities will be distributed first to the state, when paid out while the county’s funding will be paid directly by the federal government.

Baker also said the recent Consensus Revenue Estimating Group report shows revenue flowing into state coffers is improving.

Baker said as of the end of March, income for the state’s general fund, the main bank account used to pay for state operations, was $45.5 million above what had been predicated in January.

Additionally, revenues for the state’s budget reserve account, an account used to provide funds for government agencies if money from the general fund runs short, has increased by $25.6 million over projections. Combined revenue collections are $71.3 million, 6.2% higher than projected at this point in the fiscal year.

Baker said the legislature plans to host a special session in July to further discuss the allocation of the American Rescue Plan.
