Coach focuses on building the team

The Green River High School softball team are seeking their first win of the season as they travel to Natrona County to take on both Natrona and Kelly Walsh this weekend. They take Natrona on Friday at 3 p.m., while their game with Kelly Walsh starts at noon.

Head coach Blair Aimone is working with her staff and the girls to make sure they improve every week.

"They are working hard. And they are starting to pick up with what we are trying yo do. I am a fundamental softball coach. We use two hands and two eyes for everything we do and some of these kids have never been told this," she said.

The girls' recent struggles, in Aimone's mind, comes down to mental blocks the girls have while playing. She said the Lady Wolves have a tendency to get inside their own heads while playing, which leads them to make mistakes. However, she said the girls are hearing a lot of the information the coaching staff is giving them for the first time and the team continues making strides.

"We just need to keep moving forward," she said.

The team is working on everything they can to improve their game, from hitting to catching. Aimone said hitting is an issue they're working on as the Lady Wolves are striking out too much.

"We try and incorporate every aspect of the game in practice from base-running to fielding. Our pitchers are throwing 200 pitches every day to work on control," she said.

One of the groups making great progress is the team's outfielders.

"Our catchers have also very much improved their blocking and throwing skills," Aimone said.
