Group seeks June event in GR

Flaming Gorge Days is another year away, but a group of cornhole players are wanting to bring an event to Green River in June.

Zac Page, representing 307 Cornhole, approached the Green River City Council Tuesday night, to discuss the possibility of hosting weekend tournament June 11-13. Page said plans are preliminary but anticipates the event could include other family events and musical performances.

Page said the group hosted a tournament last year and attracted more than 100 competitors from seven states, saying they were able to host the event while adhering to pandemic restrictions at the Rock Springs Holiday Inn.

Page said 307 Cornhole came about in 2018 when he wanted to build more awareness of the game, starting in Green River and soon hosting weekly gatherings in Green River and Rock Springs. Page said the group amounts to nearly 50 members and plays twice a week alternating between the Eagles clubs in Green River and Rock Springs.

Mayor Pete Rust said city representatives will discuss the event with the group and was optimistic about the city working with Cornhole 307. Councilman Robert Berg said he supports having other events take place in Green River this summer.

Flaming Gorge Days and the people it brings to Green River benefit local businesses. The city’s Arctic Circle, which Berg manages, often has its most successful week of sales of the year during the event. Berg said the postponement last year had an impact on traffic to Arctic Circle and anticipates a similar impact this year, but understands the reasoning behind the postponement. The committee behind Flaming Gorge Days announced the event would be postponed to 2022, citing concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19 through the event.

While Flaming Gorge Days won’t happen, other organizations are moving ahead with plans for the summer, despite a few unknown elements such as the size of group gatherings that will be allowed by the state.

The county’s most high-profile event of the summer, the Sweetwater County Fair, is moving ahead. The Sweetwater County Events Complex has announced its fair first concert last week, with Frankie Ballard set to perform at Wyoming’s Big Show Aug. 5.

According to a release from the events complex, more concerts will be announced later and plans for secondary entertainment, along with 4H and FFA events, are also in the works.

Green River’s Art on the Green committee announced it intends to host the long-running art celebration this August as well. However according to committee member Judy Roderick, the committee isn’t sure if the event will be hosted at a physical location, online or a combination of the two.

The Green River Chamber of Commerce has yet to make an announcement regarding its annual River Festival, which is hosted the same weekend as Art on the Green, though the chamber is soliciting sponsorships from member businesses through its weekly newsletter.

In Rock Springs, events are being scheduled as well, with the Rock Springs Main Street/URA announcing its Blues and Brews event taking place June 19.

Taking place at Bunning Park, the event features regional craft breweries offering samples of their beers while musicians perform throughout the day. The event is being hosted alongside the annual Rods and Rails Car Show, another Rock Springs Main Street/URA event, which takes place in downtown Rock Springs.
