The Woman's Club of Rock Springs, part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, with members from both Green River and Rock Springs met on March 16th at White Mountain Library for their General Meeting.
The club has hit the ground running since we have been able to meet again. We are working on three more buddy benches for kids who feel they need a friend for the day. They may be new to town or just need a friend to play with or talk to. Teachers are trained in the use of the benches and the information is passed on to students. These will be placed at Washington School in Green River, Northpark School and Stagecoach Elementary in Rock Springs upon completion. We greatly appreciate Walmart's $100 donation toward this cause and Sherwin Williams 2 for the price of one on our polyurethane coating needed to protect the benches. Sue McGuire will be coordinating this project as our Juniors' Special Programs Chairman.
We are also working on a fundraiser for three benches to be placed at the columbarium in the Rock Springs Cemetery. Please contact us to donate. We will purchase the materials and the cemetery staff will build the benches over the winter. This is a Community Impact Project taken on by the club and chaired by Marcia Volner
We attended Community Day at the mall on Saturday the 13th and the workers reported collecting money for the columbarium benches through donations and people purchasing our microwave bowl holders and kitchen boas which are also currently available on the marketplace and on our Facebook page.
Maggie Choate read a nice thank you from The HOPE SQUAD in Green River for our donation toward their T-shirts so that other students who may be contemplating suicide can identify them and can get help. She also read a thank you from Wyoming Cancer Resource Services.
The club gave money for bladders full of sunscreen to be put at a park in Green River and one in Rock Springs. Look for the dispensers with our club name on them. Using the sunscreen can help prevent skin cancer.
Our speakers for this month were Shelly Wells and Delney Gorden from the Sweetwater Prevention Coalition. Some of the areas they work on for Prevention are underage alcohol and marijuana use, adult overconsumption of alcohol, Tobacco prevention, Opioid/Prescription drug misuse/abuse, other drug prevention, and suicide prevention. These ladies have a big job. Thank you for what you do.
April Dittman will be working on another Rally Up fundraiser to start April 16th. We are accepting donations for this fundraiser now. So far we have golf clubs, gardening and a tiger basket and potica. We also hope to have a yard sale again this summer. Please let us know if you have items you would like to donate by contacting a member, sending us a message through Facebook or our Website.
Our chairman, Gloria Skiles, for Health and Wellness is beginning our book distribution through Meals on Wheels now that The Pandemic is receding.
We were proud to initiate Kelly Sugihara into the club. She will be a great addition.
We were sad to learn of the passing of one of our past presidents Liesel Shineberg. Our condolences to her family and friends.
Our next general meeting will be at 11:30 in the small meeting room at White Mountain Library on April 20th. Please join us.
Our speaker will be Debra Soule of the Community Fine Arts Center. Each year she collects art for us from the schools that will be taken to the GFWC Wyoming state convention which is on April 24th in Laramie this year. The art is put into a competition with art from across the state and winners are given ribbons and monetary donations from the state and our club.
The hostesses for the meeting were Mary Lou Henderson and Marcia Volner. A luncheon costing $10 was provided including sandwiches, chips, coleslaw and cookies.
Other members in attendance included Edna Larsen, Betty Jean Carter, Leslie Jo Gatti, Kelly Sugihara, Judy Litchfield, April Dittman, Cindy Wakefield, Sue McGuire, Cindy Moore, Maggie Choate, Gloria Skiles, and guest Debbie McGarvey along with our two speakers.
