Wolves, Lady Wolves basketball teams see winning week

The Green River High School basketball teams had winning weeks after taking on the Rock Springs Tigers Thursday and the Natrona County Mustangs Saturday.

The boys earned a 58-52 win over Rock Springs and a 66-51 win over Natrona, while the girls had a 63-33 win over the Lady Tigers and a 71-53 win over Natrona. With the boys, head coach Laurie Ivie said the two wins represents the Wolves getting closer to one of their season goals.

“All season long, our goal has been to put the best version of ourselves on the court for four, solid quarters. We are getting closer and closer to meeting that goal,” she said.

The biggest factor for the Wolves is an improvement in the boys’ teamwork, which Ivie said the boys needed each other to fill their roles and get the job done. While Kolby Ivie and Jachob Fuss have been steady workhorses for the team, the coach said Dylan Taylor has also stepped up in recent weeks, performing well defensively and offensively.

However, she sees a lot more work being put in by all members of the team over the past several weeks.

“As a whole, I’ve never had a group of kids work harder, she said. “They hold nothing back, at practice and during games.”

Against Rock Springs, Fuss scored 21 points with a 75% shot percentage from the field. Ivie said Taylor was also able to lock down Tiger guard Alan Martinez in the second half, holding him to the 14 points he scored before halftime.

“That was huge for us,” she said.

Against Natrona County, Taylor scored 25 points, while Fuss had 14 and Jax Peterson scored three three-point shots. Kolby Ivie ended the game with five assists and five deflections.

The Lady Wolves continue building a winning streak, currently at five games. Head coach Rick Carroll said he’s been very happy with how the girls have played in the last week, especially after the Lady Wolves were able to dismantle Natrona County’s offense in the second half.

“We did a lot better job in the second half, taking care of the ball against their press,” Carroll said.

Figuring out the press was key to that victory, as Carroll said the Lady wolves struggled with turnovers during the first half, but were able to pressure Natrona in the second.

The game remained close until the final minutes of the fourth quarter, where the Lady Wolves were able to end with an 18-point lead.

“We’re really getting the ball where it needs to be,” Carroll said.

Against Rock Springs, Megan Counts lead the scoring effort with 18 points, followed by Kelsi Angelovich with 12 and Sarah Wilson with 10.

Against Natrona, Kayde Strauss scored 23 points, with Gabby Heiser following up with 13 and Wilson with 12. Strauss scored 10 of 12 free throws and sunk three of five three-point attempts.
