The Lady Wolves didn’t start their season the way they would have liked, but were able to rebound after a loss Friday.
The team sits a 1-1 for the season so far, their first game a 56-50 losing effort to Laramie and a dominating 50-34 win over Cheyenne South at home Saturday.
“We made some steps forward from last night (in Laramie),” head girls basketball coach Rick Carroll said after Saturday’s game.
Carroll said he’s coach a young team this year, with only three seniors playing for the Lady Wolves this season. With his young team, he said the coaching staff are still working on finding which players are best suited for the different team roles. With Cheyenne South, Carroll started to see the team coming together, especially in the later half of the game.
“We really settled down and played well in the second half,” Carroll said.
While the Lady Wolves are going into the Flaming Gorge Classic with a win, Carroll said there are some issues he wants to iron out before their next game. He wants to address the team’s post defense, as well as the team’s fouls before playing Campbell County Friday.
“We’re fouling too much,” he said.
Carroll also said he wants to work on having his players turn over the ball more and improve their shooting accuracy. Carroll’s concern focuses on the girls being able to shoot the ball frequently, but their shots are unable to find the basket.
One aspect he’s happy with is the Lady Wolves’ ability to rebound, saying rebounds are a large portion of how the team gets control of the basketball.
Overall, Carroll said the girls and the coaching staff are happy to have a season to play, saying they’re working hard to ensure they have a full season of competition.
“We’re just happy to be playing,” he said.
