The Green River Wolves made a long road trip last Friday to take on the highly-ranked Cody Broncs, who were solid on both offense and defense throughout the night and moved their record to 6-1 on the season while the Wolves fell to 2-5.
The Broncs, who have not given up more than 6 points to an opponent all season, scored their second shut out despite the Wolves forcing four Cody turnovers. The Broncs used seven different running backs to wear down the Wolves and rack up a season best 455 yards in total offense.
The Wolves’ James King was back from injury and ran well, but the quick swarming Cody defense shut down the rest of the Wolves offense throughout the night.
The Wolves won the coin toss, but deferred to the second half and kicked to Cody. Cody got a couple of good runs, but a penalty and a tackle for a loss by Green River’s senior defensive lineman Derek Salvidar stopped Cody for no gain and they got of a good punt and the Wolves took over deep in their own territory.
The Wolves were stopped on three straight plays by Cody's tough defense. Cody then took eight plays to go 50 yards and score a touchdown. With P.A.T. kick good, they grabbed an early 7-0 lead.
Cody again stopped the Wolves on three straight plays and then ran the ball eight straight, which culminated in a Nick Talich touchdown to give the Broncs the 14-0 lead just before the end of the first quarter.
The Wolves’ first drive of the second quarter was another three and out, but on Cody’s second play from scrimmage, Gabe Burdette sacked Cody’s quarterback causing a fumble the Wolves recovered.
King ran the ball three times for good gains before Burdette picked up a first down on a run. It looked like the Wolves’ offense might be gaining some momentum. The Wolves completed an 11-play drive, but it stalled on a failed forth down play and the Wolves came away with no points and had to turn the ball back to the Broncs, who went on a long 72-yard scoring drive to score their third touchdown of the half. After the P.A.T. was missed, they had a 20-0 lead at half time.
The Wolves showed some life in their first drive with a big 36-yard pass completion from quarterback Jachob Fuss to his receiver Dylan White, but the drive stalled after a loss of 5 yards on a high snap and the Wolves had to punt the ball back to Cody.
After a great punt from White to the Cody 12-yard line, the Wolves’ defense came up big when Kolby Ivie knocked the ball out from Cody’s Talich and Tony Murphy recovered for Green River.
The two teams traded series, with neither scoring until Cody scored again on a 14-yard quarterback keeper to take the score to 27-0. The Wolves ran seven plays without a score to finish the third quarter.
To start the forth quarter, Cody appeared to be wearing down the Wolves with their seven running backs as they again ran nine plays before Talich ran the ball in. The following P.A.T was blocked by Green River’s Seth White and Cody was up 34-0.
The Wolves offense was once again stopped on three straight plays, but Cody did not let up and went on a 12-play drive to score their final touchdown of the game going up 40-0.
Despite the loss, Green River can still get into the playoffs with a win on the road in their final regular season game against the always tough Star Valley Braves.
