As more summer events throughout southwest Wyoming get cancelled due to concerns of spreading COVID-19, Green River Main Street still plans to host its popular Farmer’s Market in July.
At least, that’s the plan right now.
Jennie Melvin, Green River Main Street/URA administrator, said the organization isn’t sure what the recommendations from the state will be in July. As such, Main Street is moving ahead with the market, though only in a tepid fashion. Normally, Melvin would have had the vendor registration packets sent to interested vendors by March, but hasn’t done that yet.
“I’m just debating with how to proceed with the Farmer’s Market,” she said. “It’s an uncertain time for sure.”
Melvin said the difficulty comes in the event being similar to a grocery store, but she has concerns with maintaining adequate social distancing space for customers. She said other accommodations, such as hand-washing stations and increased sanitation are not difficult to comply with.
However, another concern arises with the potential response, as vendors may not return to subsequent markets if the customer count is low. Another factor for vendors is if other nearby cities plan to host the markets as well, because traveling to a region for multiple markets is a more cost-effective decision than traveling to an area for a single day. Melvin said she’s been in contact with Chad Banks, manager of Rock Springs Main Street, to find out what the city plans to do with its market.
She said there has been some interest in the Green River Farmer’s Market, with some vendors contacting her about the market.
Melvin said the market doesn’t take a lot of planning time to set up, which has allowed Green River Main Street the opportunity to wait longer before moving forward with it.
The Green River Farmer’s Market is scheduled to begin July 8 and is hosted every Wednesday throughout the summer on Roosevelt Drive.
