The Foundation of the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming recently granted each congregation in the state $10,000 to distribute in their towns for COVID-19 relief projects. St. John’s Episcopal Church determined to spend the funds on several projects.
The first and largest project was to grant $400 each to multiple servers who had lost their jobs due to the closure of restaurants.
“These people are among the hardest hit by the economic changes resulting from the virus. These are people who serve us every day and we wanted to help them during these hard times,” Ruth Lauritzen, volunteer priest for the church said.
Eight thousand dollars of the grant went to the servers. Vestry member Terry Warren spent countless hours finding them and identifying their need.
The church also donated $1,000 to the local food bank and another $1,000 to Sweetwater County School District No. 2 to be applied to unpaid student lunch accounts.
“The Foundation requested that we use the grant in a way that would best support our own town. We feel that we have accomplished this mission and thank the Foundation for the opportunity to help our community,” Lauritzen said.
St. John’s Episcopal Church is located at 350 Mansface.
The church is currently not meeting due to the COVID-19 crisis.
