Our View: District's food program deserves kudos

If the COVID-19 pandemic has shown us anything, it’s that normal life can be changed in an instant. Three months ago, who would have thought we would have seen schools closed, business hours reduced and alerts telling people to wear masks while in public and to shelter at home?

One of the most vulnerable groups in Green River are children and teens. With the closure of schools, many face food shortage on top of situations where parents may find themselves out of work because of the pandemic.

However, with Sweetwater County School District No. 2’s expanding food program, those children who may have otherwise been hungry can have access to a free meal.

While serving meals from locations throughout Green River was a good idea, the district has excelled in employing buses to help drop food off to children who wouldn’t be able to walk to a school. Providing meals for the weekend is another great addition to a program that ensures children won’t go hungry in our community.

We’re excited to see tweaks to what is served, including an initiative to send frozen foods with children to help add some variety to their menus.

While we hope normalcy returns and the food service program won’t need to be a longterm fixture in Green River, we understand the situation with COVID-19 is fluid and any sort of long term planning is impossible to do. With the district’s food service program, we can rest assured children who would have otherwise been hungry have something to eat.
