All-Star soccer game approved by WCA

Wyoming high school seniors will have a chance to show their soccer skills one last time after the Wyoming Coaches Association approved All-Star games for both the girls and boys teams. The initiative was unanimously approved Wednesday.

“I just felt it was long overdue that the soccer players, coaches and officials be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the game,” Chris McMackin, head boys soccer coach in Campbell County, said.

The games are intended to recognize graduating athletes who demonstrate sportsman-like attitudes, as well as having quality character, integrity, and display good citizenship according to a release from the coaches association.

Selection for participation is done through invitation only and is up to the discretion of the Wyoming Coaching Foundation Executive Board and the All-Star Soccer selection committee formed from 3A and 4A soccer coaches.

The games are currently scheduled to take place June 27 in Gillette, with players and coaches attending practices earlier in the week at Gillette College.

“We want to add opportunities for student-athletes, officials and coaches to showcase their talent that is the result of years of hard work and dedication to the sport of soccer in Wyoming,” WCA soccer representative Mike Sauers said in a media release.

“Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see what happens with the current situation around the country and world. Let’s hope it all passes over soon and we can get back to our normal lives and start enjoying things like the first Wyoming High School Soccer All-Star games in over 20 years, McMackin said.
