After arriving in Casper last week, the Green River High School boys and girls basketball teams face a situation no one could have predicted: the cancellation of the State basketball tournament.
Concerns of spreading the COVID-19 coronavirus resulted in officials canceling the basketball tournament Thursday. Also cancelled was the State speech and debate tournament in Green River.
“The 3A/4A State Basketball Tournament will not take place this year,” a release from the Wyoming High School Athletics Association states. “We understand the tremendous disappointment this decision is for our student athletes, especially our seniors, but please realize that we must be a responsible state organization and that our highest priority is ensuring the safety of our students, schools and communities.”
The girls played one game before the cancellation was announced, losing to Cheyenne Central 62-37. The boys did not have a chance to play Thursday.
Despite the cancellations, the WHSAA announced All-State selections.
“In a crazy turn of events, and a crazy time in our lives, the basketball show goes on,” Rick Stonehouse, President of the Wyoming Coaches Association wrote in an email.
From the girls, Madelyn Heiser and Ashlyn Birch were selected for All State.
Kayde Strauss was selected for Second Team All State.
For the boys, Dylan Taylor was nominated to Second Team All State.
