Indoor track competes in Gillette

Green River’s indoor track team traveled north last week to compete with 16 other Wyoming teams at the Basin Nation Indoor Track Meet at the Campbell County Recreation Center in Gillette.

Among the teams competing were both Gillette high schools, all three Cheyenne high schools along with both Casper High Schools,Laramie and Sheridan along with Rawlins, Riverton, Big Horn, Lovell, Tongue River, Worland, and Douglas resulting in close to 200 competitors in some events.

The top performance for the Wolves on the day was a school record-setting performance by junior Muriel Jones, who finished second in the 3,200 meters in a time of 12:10.28.Jones’ time was 1 second away from first and 7 seconds below the school records.

Other top finishes for the Wolves included sophomore Kaelea Gibson, who tied her season’s best by taking forth in the girls’ high jump at 4-10. The girls’ sprint medley relay team, made up of freshman Olivia Sheets, sophomore Madison Yoak, Jones, and senior Mariyah Brady, finished sixth out of 10 teams while cutting 14 seconds of their previous best time of the season. Brady also finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles, running her best time of the season in the prelims in 9.36.

Other personal records recorded included Sheets in the 55-meter dash and the triple jump, Gibson in the 800 meters and 200 meters, freshman Jacey Leon in the 200 meters, and Karli Rasmussen and sophomore Lillian Travis in the shotput.

For the boys, junior Tyler Killett achieved his best time of the season in the 55-meter hurdles and 200-meter dashes, as did Cole McKinley. Junior Jared Westenskow also set his seasons best in the 400 meters, as did Evin Hansen, Shay OMelia and Kaden Gailey in the 1,600-meter run. Also, freshman Trysten Halter accomplished his best mark of the season in the long jump.

Once again, head track coach Dan Hansen was pleased with all the team’s personal best of the season.

“(It) shows that the athletes work in practice is paying of towards the end of the season,” he said.

Next week, the team will be in Laramie at the University of Wyoming’s complex for a Friday meet and then follow up with the State meet in Gillette two weeks from now.
