The speech and debate team returned from the Star Valley Tournament in Afton with a first place 4A finish with several students placing in their respective events. Assistant coaches Dan Parson and Samantha Worden are very pleased with how the season is going and how well the team is progressing.
“The season is shaping up beautifully for our team,” Worden said. “So many of the kids have come to us with natural talent, as well as dedication to learning and growing as individuals. We are excited to see how the team shapes and grows into their own and helping to create a strong environment for everyone included.”
One of the things Parson has noticed about this year’s team is that while the team is excelling and continually improving, the sub-culture of the team is very accepting of each other, regardless of their experience. They are focused on overall growth, and that, Parson said, “is how state championship teams are made.”
The team heads to Orem, Utah this coming weekend for the Marie Clegg Jones Memorial High School Debate Speech Competition. It will be the first time GRHS has competed in this tournament. While the team generally stays in Wyoming, they like to get out of state at least once a year to get a feel for what schools in other states are doing.
With several more weekends competing out of town, the team looks forward to preparing for and hosting the State Speech and Debate Tournament in March.
