The Green River High School Speech and Debate team ended 2019 on a high note with their recent competition at the Holiday Classic at Cheyenne East in December. As one of the largest tournaments in the region with 29 schools, including attendance from some larger Colorado schools, GRHS ended the competition with five students in final rounds and fifth place overall.
“Everyone grew and we saw improved scores on judge ballots for almost everyone,” assistant coach Dan Parson said. “I tell the kids that as long as we grow a little each round, the score is not important.”
The team will be headed to the Kelly Walsh Tournament this weekend and will spend much of the next two months on the road.
“Overall, we are doing well. We are a much smaller team than we have been in years past, but they are becoming a second family and it is rewarding to watch shared experience and hard work bond kids into a cohesive team. The bulk of the season is ahead of us and I am excited to see what we can do,” Parson said.
