Students prepare for All-State drama

Drama students from Green River High School will join hundreds of talented and enthusiastic students from around the state at the annual Wyoming State Thespian Festival.

The competition is hosted annually by the Wyoming Educators of Secondary Theatre and will take place this year at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Competition begins Dec. 5 and culminates with an awards’ ceremony in the evening on Dec. 7.

This event includes competition in the performance and technical areas of theater.  Acting events include one-act plays, devised theater, two-person scenes and monologues.

Technical events of the competition include scenic design, lighting design, publicity design/marketing, short film, tech olympics, costume design, costume construction, stage management, sound design and theatrical make-up design.  Students may also compete in the writing of original scripts for one-act plays, two-person scenes and monologues.  

All performances are free and open to the public. Donations are always greatly appreciated.

Design entries are on display in the designated areas at the performance venues.

In addition to a weekend of activities for theater students, this annual event is also the time in which the Wyoming High School Theatre Director of the Year and Administrator of the Year is chosen. An outstanding drama teacher and administrator are chosen annually from among participating schools.

Awards for the students include individual placing medals in all areas of competition. Students are selected by the judges of each event, to receive the prestigious All-State medals. Sweepstakes trophies for the schools are given in three categories, 1A/2A, 3A and 4A. 

The public is encouraged to attend the competition. Performances begin Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

A listing of the events will be available at the information desk located at the University of Wyoming. Residents should experience the talent of the creative Wyoming theatre students.
