School transportation employees circulate petitions

Transportation employees at Sweetwater County School District No. 2 continue to voice their support of two employees they claim were dismissed days before the school year started.

According to Laura Pearson, an employee in the transportation department, they have started circulating petitions to support rehiring Oscar Barton and Brian Beckerman. Barton was the head of the transportation department and represented the group during board meetings. Beckerman was a mechanic in the department.

Pearson said they have collected more than 750 signatures and will seek additional signatures up to the Nov. 12 school board meeting.

"Our department has been working on building solidarity throughout the community," she said in an email to the Star.

Many transportation employees have attended the school board meetings since September and have worked to make themselves heard by district administrators during the past few months. In October, employees wore matching T-shirts with the words "Support our team Oscar and Brian" printed on them. Pearson also spoke during the October board meeting, mentioning staff displeasure with a security camera recently placed in their break room and morale problems. Board Chairman Brenda Roosa ended Pearson's comments prematurely out of concern confidential employee topics would be mentioned.

Roosa told the Star last month cameras were installed in the transportation department's building to protect district property and facilities and was unable to comment further.

The break room security camera has since been removed.
