Tennis team takes 2nd at regionals

Both the Wolves and Lady Wolves tennis teams took second at Regionals this past weekend.

“Regionals played out like I thought it would based on our season results,” head coach Phil Harder said.

The Wolves saw some tough competition from Cheyenne Central and Laramie, while the Lady Wolves saw the the biggest competition from Cheyenne Central and Cheyenne East.

For Harder, several of his players stood out to him at Regionals.

He said the teams’ No. 1, doubles girls’ players, Morgan Atkins and Rory Ratliff played for the Regional Championship, but fell short and got the runner-up position.

He said they “played smart doubles tennis over the weekend and were impressive.”

The No. 2 doubles girls’ team, Sydney Beutel and Alicia Harrison, won the Regional Championship in a tough match against Central.

The No. 2 boys singles player, Connor Friel, stepped up and played great tennis to get into the Regional Championship, but fell short against Central.

“He has learned quickly how to find success as a single’s player this year as a former doubles stand-out player from a year ago,” Harder said.

The team will take what they learned at Regionals and use it for State this weekend in Gillette.

Learning how to adjust during a set to counter what other teams do and manage the emotional tension a match can bring is something the team will work on, Harder said.

As for doing anything special to prepare for State, the team is going to do what it has all season long: take it one practice at a time and one match at a time, he said.

The team has its sights on State and they would like to obtain a top four finish.

“A top four finish for team is always a goal, but we have to take one match at a time and the results will take care of themselves,” Harder said.
