Seniors earn tickets at spirit-week event

During spirit week at the senior center last week, seniors had numerous special activities to participate in.

"I'm just trying to do something different," Irish Kreis, Golden Hour Senior Center activities and marketing coordinator, said.

Each day of the week, seniors were encouraged to participate in the activity Kreis had planned.

"The whole week was fun," GHSC regular Charlene Miller said.

Monday, the seniors were tasked with telling two people about the senior center through social media, in person or with a phone call.

Tuesday, seniors were encouraged to fill out Christmas cards to send to soldiers serving overseas. Kreis said the center had cards available, but some seniors brought their own. More than 50 cards were collected through this activity.

Wednesday, seniors brought in nonperishable food items, which were donated to the Green River Food Bank. Kreis said the seniors collected 100 nonperishable food items.

"The most productive feeling was bringing in the food. The nonperishables for someone else," Miller said.

Thursday, seniors were asked to invite a friend to lunch at the GHSC. They needed to invite someone who hadn't had lunch at the senior center in the past three months.

Friday, the last day of spirit week, seniors were encouraged to wear their favorite football apparel and attend the center's football party. During the party, attendees picked out their favorite NFL team's logo to color.

Miller said she enjoyed Friday's event the most because it was centered around football.

Kreis said every time a senior completed an activity they were given a ticket to put into a drawing to win a dinner and movie date pack basket.

The whole idea of spirit week at the center was trying to impact others, Kreis said.

The week seemed to go pretty well, however Kreis was a little disappointed with Thursday's bring a friend to lunch event.

Other than that, the event was a success and she was curious to see just how many tickets were collected throughout the week.

"We do have some people who are really competitive," she said. "They wanted their name in as much as possible."

On Monday, Jim Johnson's name was drawn out of the bucket and he was the winner on dinner and a movie night.
