New coach named for Lady Wolves soccer team

He may be the new head coach for the Lady Wolves Soccer team, but everyone associated with the program already knows him.

Chris Nielsen was officially named the Green River High School Lady Wolves soccer coach last week.

Nielsen has been an assistant coach to the Lady Wolves for six years and ran the JV program during that time. He also coached Spurs soccer teams.

“I feel honored to be selected as the head coach,” Nielsen said.

Former head coach Tracy Wyant was happy with the choice saying two of her assistant coaches put in the for position and she knew both of them would do a great job.

“I think it will be a really good fit,” Wyant said. “He’ll be able to pick up right where we left off.”

Nielsen said he’s excited to start the job and wants to build a positive culture for the Lady Wolves. Nielsen’s coaching philosophy is to create a culture for individual and team success.

He also wants to help the Lady Wolves become more resilient to games they lose. Nielsen said a lot of the Lady Wolves play soccer for fun and not to play at the collegiate level, but he feels they still must be prepared when they leave high school.

“We’re going to really focus on that,” Nielsen said. “I want to prepare them for the next step in their life.”

During his time coaching, Nielsen has learned many strategies which he plans to implement.

“I think I’ve learned is the importance of really focusing on the life skills of these high-school girls,’ Nielsen said.

“He has a really good rapport with the girls and good interaction with them,” Wyant said. “The girls seem to be excited.”

Prior to the season beginning in the Spring, Nielsen will meet with the seniors and host a parent meeting.
