Miscommunication removes team from Riverton’s schedule
While the Green River High School golf team was scheduled to play in Riverton over the weekend, the team ended up preparing for this week’s competition in Jackson at Mountain Dell Golf Course in Utah.
According to head coach Karly Eyre, a miscommunication between Athletics Director Tony Beardsley and the athletics director and golf coach for Riverton High School resulted in the Wolves not being included in the match play competition hosted in Riverton.
Eyre said the situation is frustrating for her because she has three seniors, who have committed to the sport for four years. They are playing in the 80s and would have likely placed in the top 10. She also said the younger players missed out because part of high school golf is competing against other golfers and they don’t have a chance to experience the pressure from competition.
Eyre said Beardsley was able to send the team to Mountain Dell Golf Course, which Eyre described as a good experience for her players with competition in Jackson occurring this week. She said the course helped prepare golfers for the two courses they’ll play in Jackson, the private Shooting Star Club and the Snake River Sporting Club. She said both courses force players to deal with more obstacles through bunker placement and feature tighter fairways.
She said golfers will have to carry their clubs on the Shooting Star course, saying while Wyoming High School Athletics Association guidelines allow golfers to cart their clubs, the club prohibits players from doing that. She also described it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to play at the course. With Snake River Sporting Club, she said the course will challenge players with course management and how they strategically play each hole.
The trip to Utah also allowed Eyre and other coaches to scout freshman player Ryker Mele, who she said shot low enough to be the fifth member of the boys’ varsity team. She also said seniors Trevor Moser and Kaleb Saccamano continue to play well.
