The Green River High School cross country team started its season with what could be one of the most difficult runs they will face this season.
The team hosted its annual invite competition Friday, attracting runners from Lyman and Manila to compete at a course running through Pioneer Trails Picnic Grounds north of Green River, off of La Barge Road.
According to head coach Craig Leavitt, the course featured more than a mile of sand to run though. As a result of the sand and course difficulty, Leavitt said the times were slower throughout both races.
For the girls, Madison Yoak led the team with a time of 26:28.91, good enough for third. She was followed by teammates Shelby Carson, 11th, in 32:36.89; Jazmin Winn, 13th, in 47:26.39 and Heather Allison, 14th, in 47:26.86.
The girls did not field enough runners to score team points at the meet. Leavitt said he had some girls join the team late and were ineligible for competition because they did not complete enough practices.
The boys were led by Greg Shewin, who finished second with a time of 20:46.37. He was followed by Shea O’Melia, sixth, in 23:06.63; Zeke Reading, eighth, in 23:58.86 and Christian Worden, ninth, in 24:04.04 in the top 10. Overall, GRHS placed second with a score of 31.
The team will travel to Soda Springs, Idaho, this weekend to compete in another invite. Leavitt expects the times to be faster at this meet. This will also be the first meet the team will field a girls’ team.
