Celebrating five years in Sweetwater County, the Sweetwater Regional Cancer Center invited residents to tour the facility and celebrate with them Thursday evening.
The center is a partnership between Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County and the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
In its five years of existence, the radiation oncology department has had 434 patients, administering 8,599 treatments, utilizing 1,143 treatment devices and hosting 1,701 on-treatment visits and 623 follow up visits. Amongst those 434 patients, a majority of which were prostate cancers, with 99 of the 434 receiving treatment for that cancer. The center has also treated 65 patients with breast cancer and 56 bone cancers.
Over the last five years, the medical oncology department reported 1,365 office visits, consisting of more than 900 chemotherapy and biotherapy infusions and more than 50 medication regimens, serving approximately 90 new cancer patients.
Testimonials from some of the residents who received treatment at the center were posted on the walls as well, giving a sense for how the disease can affect anyone.
The testimonials reflect both the quality of care they received in Rock Springs, as well as how convenient the cancer center makes treatment.
Residents, prior to the center's opening, were forced to have their treatments outside the area.
"All my doctors were in Rock Springs. I received excellent care during and after my surgeries," Terry Pawleska's testimonial reads. "My doctors showed professionalism and allowed me to have a say in my treatment."
Albert Carollo Jr., another patient who wrote a testimonial for the center, said he wanted to stay in Rock Springs for his treatment and is thankful for the staff and the services provided at the cancer center.
"All I had to do was be in Rock Springs for about 30 to 40 minutes a day for five days a week for six weeks," he wrote. "No SLC, no motel rooms, no travel, no long waits and easy parking."
