The Green River Knights may have lost their last two regular-season games in Cody, but the team secured the No. 2 seed in their conference for the upcoming state American Legion baseball tournament in Douglas next week.
The Knights were defeated 9-4 in their first game, then were swept 8-0 in the second half of the doubleheader Tuesday.
According to head coach Benjamin Lail, the Knights held the Cubs to four runs until the sixth inning, when Cody’s squad picked up an explosive lead. While he admits he would have liked to see the Knights leave Cody with the wins, he’s happy with how well the boys played.
“We played a good first game,” he said.
The losses in Cody add to two losses the team received in Riverton Thursday. Facing the Raiders, the Knights left Riverton with an 8-7 loss and a 12-1 loss. Prior to those games, the Knights traveled to Hayden, Colo., where they both games against the Colorado team. The first game ended 13-0 for the Knights, while the second game ended 15-2. In their first game, Joe Schultz and Ramsay Taliaferro pitched a no hitter.
Lail said the team has followed Shultz and Taliaferro throughout the season and believes if the two can continue pitching at that level, the team will go far in the upcoming tournament.
“I’ve got the best pitching staff in the state,” Lail said.
He said facing such a strong team before their state tournament appearance has fired them up for their final games in Douglas. For now, Lail said the team looks to spend as much time together as they can. Lail said the closer the team comes together, the more they’ll have each others’ back when they go to the state tournament.
Lail also said the team has appreciates the support the Knights have received from the community and looks to make Green River proud during the tournament.
