Children enjoy a day in space

More than 300 people attended the Sweetwater County Library's summer kick-off event.

Last Wednesday, the library in association with the Board of Cooperative Educational Services program created a day filled with solar system fun.

A universe of stories is this year's summer reading theme. Youth services librarian, Becky Irwin, gushed about her excitement for the following season. The library has events all summer lined up rooted in Science Technology Engineering and Math to help kids in Green River stay busy and learn.

The library set up different stations so 326 patrons attending would move through areas quickly and efficiently. The large blow up planetarium stole the show for most kids.

"The planetarium was so cool. My favorite part was when the constellations rolled around," Toby Vaughn said.

Irwin would lead the kids in groups, climbing through a tunnel to reach the middle of a blown up dome. She would share information and then they would explore the stars. Emma Allred even circled around for a second showing she loved it so much.

Other stations included coloring sun catchers, making a parachute system, getting temporary tattoos and making slime.

"Slime is fun to make and play with," Jacob Allred said.

Public service librarian, Jennifer Holden, said making the kids happy is their primary goal. Every year, they try to create new and inventive programs for kids. Having family-friendly activities like these gives families something free to do during the long summer days and it promotes the library's summer reading program.

While this event was held in the library most will be outside at a park.
