A Wolf will be going to college in South Dakota.
Green River High School senior Marcos Valerio signed a letter of intent to compete for Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D., on the Yellowjackets' cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams. While at the university, he plans to study business and management.
"I've always taken business classes in high school," Valerio said. "It's always been something that's interested me."
Valerio said he liked the location, team and education offered at Black Hills State. He also has teammates at the university, something which also helped influence his decision.
Valerio said he didn't start thinking about competing competitively in college until his senior year. He said he'll have to double the training regimen he's done in high school to condition himself for collegiate competition. However, before he does that, he has a few goals he wants to accomplish in his last weeks of high school.
Valerio will compete at State for the Wolves track team, where he said he hopes to bring home a few more medals and improve his 2-mile time, aiming to possibly set a school record in the process.
Valerio's coaches have described him as a hard-working individual.
Head track coach Dan Hansen said Valerio is one of the track team's leaders, effectively leading the team through example.
Head cross country coach Craig Leavitt said he deserves to compete at the college level, saying he was very eager to compete during his high school years.
"(Valerio is) the only kid who I've ever told 'you can't do that many events,'" Leavitt said.
