Head coach Chris Bieber said the Wolves could beat any team they were pitted against at Regionals, and the Wolves proved him right by nearly taking the regional championship.
The Wolves started the tournament with a do-or-die game against their rivals from Rock Springs, where a loss would mean the end of the Wolves’ season. The two teams had close games previously, the first being a 2-1 win for the Wolves at home and later a 1-1 tie in Rock Springs. However, the previous meetings between the Wolves and Tigers didn’t foretell a dominating first half by the Wolves, which resulted in five unanswered goals scored.
“We deflated them after the first half,” Bieber said.
The second half would be scoreless for both teams and ended with the Tigers getting sent home. The following day, the Wolves took on the top team in the 4A West Conference, the squad from Kelly Walsh in Natrona County. While the game wasn’t the blowout the Wolves gave the Tigers, the Wolves prevailed 1-0 over the Trojans. Bieber said the Kelly Walsh team hadn’t seen their new formation, which he said led to a number of breakdowns on the Trojans’ side. He also called the victory a major motivator for the team.
The Wolves carried that momentum to the championship game against Star Valley, a team Green River had yet to beat this season.
The Wolves and Braves battled to a 1-1 tie, forcing the match to be settled in a shootout. The Wolves would end up on the short end of the stick, dropping the game after a 3-2 shootout.
The Wolves will travel to Jackson for the State soccer tournament Thursday, where they will take on Cheyenne East. If the Wolves overcome the Thunder Birds, they will either take on Thunder Basin, which has had an undefeated season so far, or Star Valley.
