May the Fourth be with you

Children of all ages were using the force to navigate their way from activity to activity at the May the Fourth be with you event.

On Saturday afternoon the Sweetwater County Library hosted a May the Forth be with you event to celebrate the Star Wars franchise, which is known for the line "May the force be with you."

At this event, children had the opportunity to make a BB-8, a droid character in the Star Wars franchise, make a Jedi training manual, create a lightsaber bookmark or pose for pictures with some of their favorite Star wars characters including Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2. They could also take photos in one of the spaceships from the franchise.

When the children were not busy learning how to make craft items, they were waiting for their turn to take the Jedi training class. During this class, the participants learned the rules of the Jedi. They also learned how to fight like a Jedi by using an inflatable lightsaber to train. All of the children were divided into groups of two and asked to follow the rules their Jedi master, who was a library volunteer, was asking them to do. They would go back and forth taking turns with the lightsabers.

Those who came to the event dressed in a costume had no idea they had just volunteered themselves to participate in a costume contest. Three Darth Vaders, three Princess Leias, an Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rey and a scavenger were all vying for the chance to take first place in the contest. Rey, who was played by Ava Wendel, took first place. Second place went to John Thompson, whose creepy Darth Vader voice won the hearts of the audience, and the third through fifth places went to one of princesses and the other two Darth Vaders. Those in the contest who hadn't received a big prize didn't go away empty handed and were given lightsaber pencils.
