The Lady Wolves first conference game turned out to be a rough start for them when they took on the Rock Springs Lady Tigers.
On Thursday, the Lady Wolves played the Lady Tigers on their home field and lost, 9-0.
However, the team bounced back against the Evanston Lady Red Devils on Friday with a 2-1 win in overtime.
Head coach Tracy Wyant said the Lady Tigers are a good, tough, solid team this year. She said they are good on defense and offense and had already played a few conference games, but this was the Lady Wolves first conference game.
“We had some opportunities, but we just couldn’t get one in the back of the net,” Wyant said. “They definitely can play better.”
Wyant said once the Lady Wolves fell further and further behind, they started to get discouraged because they were trying so hard to score at least one, but nothing would go in for them.
The Lady Wolves had a few areas where they broke down during this game and it showed. Against the Lady Red Devils, the Lady Wolves struggled to get the ball in the net again.
“It was just one of those things where we were in front of their net most of the time. We just couldn’t get a goal,” Wyant said.
In the first half, the Lady Wolves were holding onto the ball to much and playing to much defense. She told them they need to get some shots on the goal. With Evanston, the Lady Wolves learned they needed to get shots off sooner, rather than waiting for the perfect shot. The turning point in the game was when Lady Wolf Zoe Turner received a yellow card for allegedly shoving a Lady Red Devil.
Wyant said Turner never shoved anyone. She just stood her ground and the Lady Red Devil bounced off of her. After that “bad call,” the Lady Wolves were mad and started attacking the goal.
“The last 30 to 40 minutes of the game was their best soccer,” Wyant said.
They continued the push through overtime and they wound up winning, 2-1. The Lady Wolves will not have a lot of time to rest this week. They played a game last night against Jackson and will play against Kelly Walsh on Friday at 5 p.m., and Natrona County on Saturday at noon. Both games are at home. Wyant said the Lady Wolves are scheduled to play two to three games a week, which will make April a rough month for them. There will not be a lot of time in-between games for practice.
“There’s no time for recovery,” Wyant said. “We’ve got to rest them when we can.”
The Lady Wolves will try to stay healthy and continue to address any issues they encounter as they play.
