Winter weather in Green River has created a number of potholes the city is working to address.
With the weather improving throughout the last week, more potholes have appeared on city streets. Speaking during the Green River City Council meeting last week, City Administrator Reed Clevenger said the city’s streets crew used up the patching material it had, forcing the city to order 25 tons of mix.
“We burned through that (original supply) immediately,” Mark Westenskow, director of public works, said.
Westenskow said crews are working to fill potholes where they find them, having already worked on Riverview Drive and Bridger Drive due to the high traffic those areas receive. He also said crows have worked on Astle Avenue and Riverbend Drive.
“The guys are working through as best they can,” Westenskow said.
Westenskow said the city had a hard winter, damaging many of the roads in the city. However, Westenskow also believes that filling potholes on some streets is only throwing money away, saying some streets need more work on them. Westenskow said he plans to budget for a city pavement survey to assess the street conditions. Westenskow also said he’s investigating a pavement preservation program to work on areas that could have their pavement lifespan extended through a street overlay.
However, some places, will need extensive work. Westenskow said those streets would have to be addressed through a sixth-penny special purpose tax.
