While the boys soccer team traveled to Worland for competition, the Lady Wolves had the opportunity to stay home and compete in the annual Todd Malonek Southwest Invitational during the weekend.
The tournament is named for Malonek, an assistant coach for the boys soccer team and booster for the high school’s soccer programs who died in 2016.
The Lady Wolves had a strong start against Pinedale in the first round of the tournament, dominating the game with a 9-0 victory.
“It was a good starting point for us,” head girls soccer coach Tracy Wyant said.
That success in the main bracket would be short-lived however, as the Lady Wolves were defeated by Lander 2-0 in the next stage of the tournament. The Lady Wolves would bounce back in their final match Saturday, defeating Powell 4-0.
Wyant said she’s still working out which positions her players are best suited for, saying she ran four different starting lineups throughout the tournament.
While Wyant attributes the loss to Lander as the result of some missed opportunities, she said the Lady Wolves kept up with the team throughout much of the game. She believes if the team didn’t break down twice early in the first half, the Lady Wolves may have taken the win.
“It could have been a different game,” she said.
The girls will take on Rock Springs High School April 4. The Lady Tigers won the Todd Malonek tournament. Currently, the game is scheduled to take place at Rock Springs High School, starting at 5 p.m. However, according to the Green River High School Athletics Office, the game could change locations to Green River, with the later contest between the Lady Wolves and Lady Tigers April 25, currently listed as a home game, taking place in Rock Springs.
