As the weather starts getting warmer some residents may begin thinking about what needs to be done with their garden or yards.
“High desert gardening can be a challenge and wanting a pond or water feature can be complicated,” Lyneen Murphy, Green River Pond and Garden Tour director, said.
This year, the community will come together on Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.to celebrate a unique free event, which has drawn upwards of 300 people in the past.
The tour is a one day event where gardeners from Green River and Rock Springs open their gardens and ponds to the public.
“It’s a self-guided tour where you can go at your leisure. You can come and go as you please, as frequently and as often as you please. It’s a great tour,” Murphy said. “You can go at your own pace, talk to the gardeners, take pictures and ask questions.”
“This year we are thrilled to have several master gardeners at selected garden homes. This is an opportunity for visitors to have access to a master gardener who can answer your questions or look into those hard gardening issues,” Lyneen said. “I want to thank Amanda Romero from the agriculture and horticulture department for her assistance in bringing together the master gardeners during the tour.”
The garden tour gives visitors exclusive access to 13 remarkable garden homes. Each garden has their owner’s style. There is no garden alike. Some gardens will have large to small ponds. Others will have a water feature or have no water element at all. Visitors will be amazed by the spirit and romance of the country garden.
“If you are looking for vegetable gardening ideas this event is for you,” Lyneen said. “If you want to take the afternoon and just enjoy the sights, sounds, smells of local gardening goldfish won’t be the only creatures in view at the garden tour. You can sneak up on fairies, frogs, playful Koi local birds and if we’re lucky a resident barn owl.”
Those who wanting to change their garden or wanting to put in their own water garden may feel like its a daunting challenge. Murphy said these are the people who need to take advantage of the garden home owners and ask questions.
“Each garden owner is anxious to share their experiences and can help you with ideas,” Murphy said. “Those who have walked through previous garden homes have expressed how amazed they were and didn’t think you could grow certain plants in our area. Many have stated they don’t feel they are in Wyoming.”
Murphy said those who are attending the garden tours will not want to forget their camera.
This year, the tour is having a raffle to raise funds for a memory tree and plaque for Bruce and Evelyn King to be placed on the river memory walk. The Kings were instrumental in garden style and beautifying Green River through teaching and sharing their gardening secrets. Each garden home will have raffle item displayed. Raffle tickets will be sold prior to and during the tour.
Tour guides will be available two weeks prior at Green River Chamber of Commerce or Riverside Nursery. For information check out the group’s Facebook website at greenriverpondtour.org or call Murphy 307-871-2003.
