Petition was not sent by county

A double-sided sheet of paper, with one side urging residents to fight Love’s Travel Stop’s ambition to build a truck stop west of Jamestown, while the other side features a copy of the county’s public comment form, was not sent by the county.

Last week, some Green River residents received the sheet in their mail. Jim Zimmerman, the code enforcement officer for the county’s Land Use Department said the letter didn’t originate from the county, despite featuring a county public comment sheet.

“We did not sent that out,” he said.

Concern about the sheet being mistakenly attributed to county’s land use offices or the Sweetwater County Commissioners led the board of county commissioners’ chairman, Wally Johnson, to publicly announce the letter didn’t come from the county during the commissioners’ meeting last week. Zimmerman said the side featuring concerns about the truck stop contained a lot of speculation, but encourages residents to submit comments about the proposal regardless of their stance. Zimmerman said the county has already received some comments about the proposal.

According to Eric Bingham, Director of the Land Use Department, the conditional use permit Love’s applied for was tabled at Love’s request. Public hearings were scheduled, but have since been postponed until the company can complete the studies they commissioned. In an email to residents and businesses interested in the permit, Bingham wrote that the meetings have yet to be rescheduled. Originally, the Sweetwater County Planning and Zoning commission would have heard Love’s conditional use permit request in April, followed by a hearing before the Sweetwater County Commissioners in May.
