Going to State for the first time since 2009, the boys basketball team will face the Campbell County Camels in the first round Thursday.
The Wolves showed they were one of the toughest teams in the 4A West Conference last week, taking second at the conference tournament. The tournament featured a third meeting between the Wolves and their rivals, the Rock Springs Tigers, at the start, with Green River winning 55-38. The second round would see the Wolves take on the Evanston Red Devils, a team they’ve struggled against in two losing efforts during the season. The Red Devils were denied their hat trick as the Wolves defeated them 60-51, putting them in the championship game.
“We were excited to be on the same side of the bracket as Evanston in the regional tournament and had hopes we’d meet up and play them again,” head coach Laurie Ivie said. “The boys were looking forward to the challenge and entered the game confident and extremely determined. When the final buzzer went off ... there truly are no words to describe it.”
Taking on Kelly Walsh for the second time this season, the Wolves played hard, but were handed a 67-47 loss. Regardless, Ivie is proud of how her players fared in the tournament.
“The team is excited after their performance at regionals,” Ivie said. “What they have managed to accomplish this season has made the coaching staff, school and community of Green River extremely proud.”
Ivie said Chase Stoger led the team throughout the tournament, but said the group played well and many individual players had big plays during the weekend.
With the upcoming game against the Camels, Ivie said the team matches well with Campbell County as the two teams play a similar style of basketball.
“We are prepared, and looking forward to the challenge,” Ivie said.
