More than a dozen Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation and Villa residents painted bowls for a cause.
Last Wednesday, tables were lined with residents and CRRC employees painting bowls for the Sweetwater County Bowls of Caring fundraising event.
YWCA development director Kayla Mannikko said, those who participate in the program buy the bowls and paint them. Mannikko said the YWCA then takes them to a kiln where they are heat treated. Once heat treated, YWCA employees then deliver the microwave and dishwasher safe bowls back to those who painted them.
The idea is that all of the groups who painted the chili bowls, cereal bowls or cups will have them back in time to use them at the soup dinner event, however a lot of participants give them as presents or don't want to risk breaking the bowl by taking it to the dinner.
Those who paint bowls are automatically given tickets to the March 21 soup dinner event, which will take place from 4-7 p.m. at the Sweetwater County Events Complex. All of proceeds raised through the bowl painting and soup event go directly to the Local YWCA programs. While CRRC purchases and paints the bowls, other groups such as Black Butte High School and Southwest Counseling Service donate bowls.
Mannikko looked around the CRRC multipurpose room and noticed something.
"A lot of individuals in here have painted for years," Mannikko said. "I can remember them."
Villa resident Kathy Vollmer said she was painting a bowl for her son because she wanted to give him something nice.
"I used to paint. I used to draw. I used to do a lot of things, but I don't anymore, " Vollmer said.
This is something the CRRC employees are trying to change by hosting these kinds of activities.
CRRC resident Tonya Keister chimed in saying she was having a lot of fun and she enjoys all of the activities the CRRC offers for its residents.
"I have a lot of favorites," she said. "I enjoy everything I do."
It costs $15 per bowl, which includes the ticket to the soup dinner event. This is a small price for CRRC to pay for the enjoyment that comes out of the event. Tickets are still available at the YWCA and the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce.
As for the bowl-painting parties, the weekends are booked up, but weekdays are still available. Mannikko said a group can book a party by contacting her at 307-352-6635 or via email at development@ywcasweetwater.org. Residents can also attend one of the open bowl-painting events. The Green River event has already taken place, but there is one scheduled from March 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the White Mountain Mall.
