The Lady Wolves basketball team traveled to Riverton and Cody this weekend and came home with two more wins.
The two non-conference wins, take the Lady Wolves to 9-9 in the regular season. In the Riverton game, the Lady Wolves came out on top, 55-38 and against Cody they won 44-26.
“I think over the course of the weekend, we played defensively pretty well,” head coach Rick Carroll said.
During the Riverton game, the Lady Wolves shot the ball well, but missed some fairly easy shots. This is something the Lady Wolves have been working on in practice. They are trying to be more efficient and clean with the ball on offense.
“I think honestly we were more consistent then we’ve been,” Carroll said.
The team played good defense throughout the entire game and it paid off.
During the Cody game on Saturday, the Lady Wolves continued to play man-on-man defense, which frustrated the Fillies.
The Lady Wolves kept one of Cody’s best players from scoring, which added to the team’s frustration.
Not only were the Lady Wolves playing good defense, but they were out rebounding the Fillies 43-18, Carroll said.
That took opportunities away from the Fillies.
Carroll said if the team continues to get better at its defense, it will be successful. The Lady Wolves offense did well scoring the the Cody game during the first three quarters of the game, but they didn’t score well in the fourth quarter. He said they were practicing keeping control of the ball to run down the clock.
Over the weekend, Carroll saw the Lady Wolves communicating and focusing better. They were also playing with more consistency.
Carroll is hoping he’ll see more of this when the Lady Wolves play Evanston at home at 6 p.m. on Thursday and when they travel to Jackson on Saturday. That game starts at 2:30 p.m.
Leading the team in the Riverton game was Ashelyn Birch with 20 points and 15 rebounds, followed by Maddie Heiser with 11 points, four rebounds, 11 assists, one block and three steals and Tayana Crowder with eight points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Leading the team in the Cody game was Birch with 12 points, 11 rebounds and one steal, followed by Kayde Strauss with 12 points, one rebound, three assists and two steals and Heiser with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
