It was one of the toughest competitions of the year, but the speech team came home with third place.
This weekend the Green River High School Speech and Debate team traveled to Casper to compete against 32 teams and about 600 students, including competitors from South Dakota.
“It was good to see competition from other states. There is always a bit of a difference in the way they compete and the level of talent they bring,” head coach Carina White said.
Cheyenne East came in first followed by Cheyenne Central. Both teams have been strong all season long.
“East and Central have strong teams this season and well-rounded teams that have strength in most events,” White said. “We have a younger team and we are working hard, but this weekend they bested us.”
When there is a competition this big it’s hard for student to make it onto the semifinals and final rounds, however some GRHS students still did well.
“Our Congress competitors did a great job as they always do,” White said.
Rebecca Shamer won Senate and Spencer Travis took fifth place, while Matthew Pickering took fifth place in House.
The team has three more regular-season tournaments scheduled before they compete at state. During those meets, the coaches will determine which 20 students will represent the team at state.
“We just have to finish our season strong if we want any kind of shot at the state title. We have to work harder and longer,” White said. “It is a bit more of a level playing field at state because all schools get 20 entries. We have had consistently strong showings in debate, Congress, humor, and informative this year so don’t count us out yet for a state title.”
