Despite a strong showing by the Wolves grapplers in Riverton, the boys ended up with a second-place finish during the annual Ron Thon Memorial tournament.
The Wolves ended the tournament with 181 points, placing higher than Thunder Basin High School, Star Valley, Powell and Rock Springs. Kelly Walsh took top honors at Ron Thon, scoring 217.5 points overall.
Several wrestlers climbed their way through the brackets during the two-day tournament, ending as either champions or runners-up in their weight classes. Payton Tucker took first place in the 182 lbs., weight class, as did Clayson Mele at 106 lbs. Kade Knezovich took second at 126 lbs., while Kade Flores took second at 120 lbs., and Dominic Martinez took second at 113 lbs.
Others faring well at the tournament were Jacob Weipert, Justin Flores, Garrett Harris, Tanner Adam, Jon Ty Leininger and Kaden Lloyd.
The wrestlers hit the road for competition in Evanston Wednesday night, though results were unavailable as of press time. Following their meet with the Red Devils, the Wolves grapplers will have a break from road trips, competing in Rock Springs against Natrona and Kelly Walsh Saturday. Rock Springs will visit Green River High School Feb. 7, followed by regionals in Rock Springs Feb. 15-16.
