A trip to Vernal, Utah, resulted in Green River High School’s grapplers earning a third-place finish at the Tournament of Champions over the weekend.
Green River earned 183 points during the tournament, finishing behind Juab High School of Nephi, Utah’s 196 and the Vernal-based Uintah High School’s winning 248 points.
A few wolves were able to shine individually during the weekend.
Clayson Mele earned a first-place finish at 106 lbs., defeating a wrestler from Uintah by decision. Kade Flores took third at 120 lbs, winning the third-place match against a wrestler from Montrose, Colo., by pin. Jacob Weipert took second at 132 lbs., losing to a Uintah wrestler by fall in the first place match. Payton Tucker took third at 182 lbs., winning the third-place match against a wrestler from Hayden, Colo., by decision.
The team will travel to Idaho Falls, Idaho, this weekend and participate in the Ron Thon Memorial tournament in Riverton Jan. 15-16.
After a meet in Evanston Jan. 30, the Wolves will face both Kelly Walsh and Natrona County High School Feb. 2, in Rock Springs.
