The Wolves are riding high after a second-place finish at their annual Thoman Soda Ash Memorial Wrestling Invitational.
The Wolves went 6-1 in dual meets and were undefeated in their pool. Green River's grapplers defeated teams Worland (66-15); Mountain View (72-6); Granger, Colo. (64-18); Cokeville (51-9) and Evanston (63-12) in Pool A. Reaching the Gold Bracket, Green River defeated Northridge High School from Layton, Utah, (60-18) but were unable to secure a win against Uintah High School from Vernal, Utah, losing 52-24.
Six wrestlers made their way to the Best of the Best competition.
Clayson Mele, Kade Flores, Justin Flores, Payton Tucker, Dominic Martinez and Ty Jon Leininger competed for Green River in the Best of the Best, where the Brown Team defeated the Gold Team 55-12.
The tournament is a rebound for the wrestling team following a defeat at home from the perennially strong grapplers of Star Valley Dec. 20. The Wolves put up a strong fight against the Braves, lead by success from Tucker, Leininger, Garrett Harris, Kade Knezovich, Martinez and Mele, but the team was overcome 38-28.
The Wolves will travel to Vernal, Utah, for a meet this weekend, followed by a trip to Idaho Falls, Idaho, next weekend. The Wolves next local competition takes place in Rock Springs Feb. 2, against Natrona County High School and Kelly Walsh.
