The Lady Wolves basketball team split the weekend with two wins and two losses at home.
During the Flaming Gorge Classic basketball tournament, teams from Wyoming, Idaho and Utah came to Green River to play each other.
The Lady Wolves played Pinedale and Bear Lake High School from Montepillar, Idaho, Lyman and Mountain View.
In the Pinedale game, the Lady Wolves came out fired up outscoring Pinedale 22-5 in the first quarter.
“We came out really fast. We were playing really good on defense and it translated to good offense as well,” head coach Rick Carroll said.
During the second quarter, both teams scored 16 leaving the Lady Wolves up 17 at the half.
“I thought we just moved the ball really well throughout the game,” Carroll said.
However, there were some areas Carroll would like to see the Lady Wolves improve. He said they need to maintain better focus throughout the game.
They were outscored in the fourth quarter 18-8. Carroll said they need to keep playing defense throughout the entire game. The final score was 64-28.
In the Bear Lake game, the Lady Wolves also came out on top, 59-41. This game started out much like their Pinedale game with the Lady Wolves coming out ready to win in the first quarter.
At the end of the first quarter, they were on top 21-7.
However, during the second quarter, Bear Lake outscored the Lady Wolves, 24-7.
“We played really well in the first quarter,” Carroll said.
The Lady Wolves built up a big lead and then lost it. They were then down by three at halftime.
He’s noticed this pattern is happening a lot in their games. In the second half, the Lady Wolves once again outscored Bear Lake with 31 points to Bear Lake’s 10.
“When we’re focused and playing well on defense it helps the rest of the game,” Carroll said.
In the Lyman game, the Lady Wolves played pretty even with Lyman until Lyman got a run.
“We didn’t play very well in that second quarter,” Carroll said.
Carroll also noticed something about the Lady Wolves they hadn’t seen before. This was the first time he saw them struggle with their confidence.
They were down by 11 at halftime. The Lady Wolves fought hard to bring down that lead to within five points with about 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but then Lyman made a couple of three-point shots and that sealed the Lady Wolves fate.
“We’ve got to work on playing with that same confidence,” he said.
In the Mountain View game, the Lady Wolves got off to a slow start.
This was something Carroll hadn’t seen them do this season.
“We just weren’t playing defense as well as we needed to,” he said. “It was just a really close game all the way through.”
It would end with Mountain View on top, 57-54. Carroll attributed it to trouble with the Lady Wolves finishing the easy shots.
Leading the Lady Wolves in the Pinedale game was Kayde Strauss with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal, followed by Maddie Heiser with 15 points, 1 rebound, two assists, one block and five steals and Ashelyn Birch with 10 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Leading the Lady Wolves in the Bear Lake game was Erika Wilson with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and one block, followed by Heiser with 11 points, four rebounds, seven assists, one block and two steals, Birch with 10 points, nine rebounds, one assist and two blocks and Tayana Crowder with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.
Leading the team in the Lyman game was Heiser with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and one block, Birch with 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Crowder with 10 points, four rebounds and one steal.
Leading the team in Mountain View game was Heiser with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and one block, followed by Strauss with 11 points, two rebounds, six assists and one steal and Crowder with 10 points and three rebounds.
