I am writing this letter endorsing Senator Hastert for re-election.
Two years ago, tragedy struck my family’s lives. My younger brother was murdered and dismembered. So many emotions dealing with the news of this all caused our lives to spin out of control. I felt upside down and couldn’t think of anything else except the punishments the offenders were likely to receive once convicted of this violent crime.
The penalties of up to three years repeated in my mind. I had no idea where to begin but wanted to make a change. It was then that I knew I would need help from my senator.
I contacted Sen. John Hastert and received a very welcoming hello. We spoke in great detail about what statute I wanted to change. He gave condolences to my family for what we had been through, and then told me to let him make some calls and he would get back to me. I could never explain the feeling I had after our phone conversation, like a weight had been lifted off me.
I wasn’t expecting to hear from Sen. Hastert as soon as I did. The next day he called me with some information on what I later found out would be his 11th hour stride to get the bill re-wrote so it could essentially be seen at that year’s legislation session. John Hastert contacted me throughout this process keeping me in the loop. I had even been invited up to Cheyenne a few times to speak on the bill. Being involved in making a change in this great state is something I will never forget. I am thankful to Sen. John Hastert for fighting for justice for my brother and my family. Because he was willing to listen to and take a step to make a change he has my vote.
