Green River High School's cross country team had a good early-season run during their annual invitational meet Friday.
Head coach Craig Leavitt said both the boys' group and the Lady Wolves' lone competitor, Madison Yoak, performed well. Leavitt was especially impressed with Yoak, saying she had a great time for the course. Leavitt said the runners worked hard Friday, despite dealing with reduced air quality from heavy smoke in the area, as well as rainfall during portions of the meet. Leavitt believes the cooler temperatures and rain helped his runners.
The meet took place at the Sweetwater County Picnic Grounds near Jamestown, a change from the usual route the team has previously run at Stratton Myers Park in Green River. Leavitt said the change was made to include different types of terrain for the meet, as well as attract other schools to the competition. Leavitt said the school has seen fewer teams participate in the invite. One example Leavitt gave involved the Rock Springs High School team, which traveled to a meet in Star Valley as opposed to participating in the nearby GRHS-hosted meet. Leavitt hopes the change will ultimately bring new interest in the high school's meet. Other teams participating in the event were from Lyman and Riverton.
The team will travel to Soda Springs, Idaho, to take part in the Cardinal Classic Sept. 1, followed by a trip to Littleton, Colo., for the Liberty Bell meet Sept. 7.
